Leaf Chain, also known as "Balance Chain", consists only of link plates and pins. This chain is subject to ANSI standards B29.8M, JIS B 1804, and ISO 4347. It is suitable for forklift masts, as balancers between head & counterweight in machine tools, or for low-speed pulling (tension linkage).

There are A- and B-type chains. Both AL6 Series and BL6 Series have the same chain pitch (19.05 mm), but they differ in Plate thickness and Pin Diameter. AL-type should only be used under conditions in which:
- There are no shock loads.
- Wear is not a big problem.
- Number of cycles is less than 100 a day.
Under other conditions, BL-type should be considered.

These steel chains have a very simple construction: link plates and pins. The two right hand digits in a chain number indicate the lacing of the chain.
Number(s) to the left indicate pitch in 1/8" units.
Ex: BL1034 Chain, is BL Series chain, with a 3 x 4 lacing, and distance of 1 1/4" (10 x 1/8) between pin centres.
